Koh Rong Sanloem: Cambodia’s Paradise Island
There are places in Cambodia that you visit for the sights, and then there are places you visit simply to slow down.
Koh Rong Sanloem is one of those places.
Located off the coast of Sihanoukville, this small island is known for its clear turquoise water, soft white-sand beaches, quiet bays, and beautiful tropical scenery. While its neighboring island, Koh Rong, is often associated with a livelier atmosphere, Koh Rong Sanloem has a more peaceful character. It is the kind of destination where you can spend an entire afternoon with your feet in the sand, listening to the sea, without feeling the need to check the time.
For travelers looking for a relaxing island escape in Cambodia, Koh Rong Sanloem is hard to beat.
Where Is Koh Rong Sanloem?
Koh Rong Sanloem is located in the Gulf of Thailand, around 25 kilometers from Sihanoukville on Cambodia’s southern coast.
The island is part of the Koh Rong archipelago and is surrounded by warm tropical waters. Although it feels remote once you arrive, getting there is relatively straightforward. Most visitors travel from Sihanoukville by ferry or speedboat, with the journey usually taking around 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the boat and sea conditions.
The trip itself is part of the experience. As the boat leaves the mainland behind, the busy coastline gradually disappears and the blue sea opens up around you. When the island finally comes into view, the first thing you notice is usually the color of the water.
And that is when the holiday really begins.
Why Koh Rong Sanloem Feels So Special
What makes Koh Rong Sanloem different from many other beach destinations is its atmosphere.
The island is not about big shopping centers, traffic, or a busy nightlife scene. Instead, life here moves at a slower pace.
You wake up to the sound of waves. You walk barefoot along the beach. You have breakfast with an ocean view. During the afternoon, you swim, explore the island, take a boat trip, or simply find a quiet place under the shade of a palm tree.
In the evening, the sky becomes darker and the stars begin to appear above the island.
For many visitors, this simplicity is exactly what makes Koh Rong Sanloem memorable.
Saracen Bay: The Island’s Famous Beach
If you are visiting Koh Rong Sanloem for the first time, Saracen Bay is one of the places you should not miss.
The bay is famous for its long stretch of white sand and calm, clear water. Along the beach, you will find resorts, small restaurants, cafés, and places to relax.
The water is often calm enough for a comfortable swim, making Saracen Bay a great choice for couples, families, and travelers who simply want to enjoy a classic tropical beach.
One of my favorite things about Saracen Bay is that you do not need a complicated plan. Sometimes the best way to experience it is simply to walk along the beach, stop for a drink, swim in the sea, and watch the sunset.
Lazy Beach: A Quieter Side of Koh Rong Sanloem
If Saracen Bay feels too developed for you, head toward Lazy Beach.
Located on the western side of the island, Lazy Beach has a more secluded and natural feeling. Getting there usually involves a walk through the island's forest, which makes the journey itself part of the adventure.
The beach is beautiful, peaceful, and particularly enjoyable for travelers who want to escape the busier parts of the island.
The western-facing location also makes Lazy Beach a wonderful place to watch the sunset.
Bring a camera, but don't spend the whole evening looking through it.
Sometimes it is better to simply sit down and watch.
Sunset Beach
Another beautiful area worth exploring is Sunset Beach, also known as Sunset Beach on the western side of Koh Rong Sanloem.
As its name suggests, this is one of the best places on the island to enjoy sunset.
Compared with Saracen Bay, the area feels more remote and surrounded by nature. The walk to reach the beach can be more challenging, especially if the weather is hot or the path is wet, so comfortable shoes are recommended.
But once you arrive, the peaceful atmosphere and sunset views make the effort worthwhile.
What Can You Do on Koh Rong Sanloem?
Koh Rong Sanloem is perfect for travelers who enjoy simple outdoor experiences.
Swim in the Clear Water
The warm tropical water around the island is one of its biggest attractions. Saracen Bay is especially popular for swimming because of its beautiful shallow water and sandy beach.
Snorkeling
The waters around the island offer opportunities to see tropical marine life and explore Cambodia's underwater world.
If you enjoy snorkeling, ask local tour operators about the best conditions and locations during your stay.
Take a Boat Trip
A boat trip is one of the best ways to see more of the island and its surrounding waters.
Depending on the tour, you may visit different beaches, snorkeling locations, fishing areas, or enjoy swimming and sunset from the sea.
For travelers visiting with friends or family, a private boat trip can also be a great way to create your own schedule.
Watch the Sunset
There is something special about sunset on a Cambodian island.
The western side of Koh Rong Sanloem offers some beautiful sunset locations, particularly around Lazy Beach and Sunset Beach.
Find a quiet spot, order a cold drink, and enjoy the view.
Explore the Island on Foot
Koh Rong Sanloem is not a place where you need to rush from attraction to attraction.
Walking between beaches can be one of the most enjoyable parts of the trip. Some trails pass through tropical forest, giving you a completely different experience from the beaches.
Wear comfortable shoes and bring drinking water, especially when walking during the middle of the day.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Koh Rong Sanloem?
Cambodia has a tropical climate, so weather can make a big difference to your island experience.
The dry season, generally from November to April, is usually the most popular period for visiting the Cambodian islands. During this time, travelers often enjoy sunnier weather and calmer sea conditions.
The wet season, roughly from May to October, can bring more rain and stronger seas. However, the island can also feel quieter during this period.
If your priority is beach weather and boat activities, the dry season is generally the safer choice.
Always check the latest weather and ferry conditions before traveling, especially during the rainy season.
How to Get to Koh Rong Sanloem
Most travelers begin their journey in Sihanoukville.
From Sihanoukville, you can take a ferry or speedboat to Koh Rong Sanloem. Different operators may serve different piers or beaches, so it is important to check your accommodation's location before buying your ticket.
This is especially important if you are staying somewhere away from Saracen Bay.
A little planning before leaving Sihanoukville can save you a lot of confusion when you arrive.
How Many Days Should You Stay?
For a first visit, I recommend staying 2 to 3 nights.
Two nights is enough to experience the main beaches, enjoy some swimming or snorkeling, and watch a beautiful sunset.
Three or more nights gives you something different: time to slow down.
And that is really what Koh Rong Sanloem is about.
You do not need to fill every hour with activities. One of the best days on the island might be doing almost nothing.
Wake up.
Have breakfast.
Go swimming.
Eat lunch.
Take a nap.
Watch the sunset.
Listen to the waves.
Sometimes that is the perfect holiday.
A Few Things to Know Before You Go
Koh Rong Sanloem is a tropical island, not a city resort, so it is worth preparing for a simpler travel experience.
Bring sunscreen, insect repellent, comfortable walking shoes, swimwear, and some cash. Internet and mobile connectivity can vary depending on where you stay.
If you are planning activities such as boat trips, snorkeling, or other island adventures, booking with a local operator can make your trip easier and give you a chance to explore places that you might otherwise miss.
Most importantly, respect the island.
Avoid leaving rubbish on the beach, reduce unnecessary plastic use, and do not damage coral or marine life.
The beauty of Koh Rong Sanloem belongs to everyone, but keeping it beautiful is everyone's responsibility.
Koh Rong Sanloem Is More Than a Beach
It is easy to describe Koh Rong Sanloem as simply a beautiful Cambodian island.
But after spending time there, that description feels incomplete.
The real attraction is the feeling of being away from everything.
It is the sound of the ocean at night.
The warm sand under your feet.
The smell of the sea after a boat ride.
The quiet walk through the forest to a hidden beach.
The sunset when the entire horizon turns orange.
And the feeling that, for a few days, you don't need to be anywhere else.
If you are planning a trip to Cambodia and want to experience a different side of the country beyond temples, cities, and cultural attractions, make some time for the coast.
Koh Rong Sanloem may be a small island, but it can leave you with some of the biggest memories of your trip to Cambodia.
